Myers upset at being left off Phillies’ roster

Twenty-four hours after learning that he had been left off the Phillies’ roster for the National League Championship Series, Brett Myers still was having trouble digesting the decision yesterday.

“I’m upset,” the pitcher said before Game 1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers last night.

Myers, 29, had hip surgery June 4. At the time, team officials thought his season was over. The righthander stayed dedicated to a rehabilitation program and made it back in early September. The club hoped Myers could help in the bullpen, but he had a 6.43 ERA in eight games. He pitched just two-thirds of an inning in the division series.

“It’s tough going through all that [rehab],” Myers said. “This is the whole reason I tried to get back, to be in the postseason. Now they took that away.

Myers confident he’ll return to ‘pen soon

Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz had an MRI on his sprained left wrist Wednesday in Philadelphia. He could miss the next three to five days, but that is considered a good thing because he has no structural damage.

Ruiz is far from the only injured player on the Phillies roster:

• Right-hander Brett Myers (strained right latissimus dorsi) rejoined the team Wednesday. He said he will throw bullpen sessions next Tuesday and Thursday. He expects to be ready to pitch after that. “I could throw a bullpen now,” Myers said. “The doc wants to wait. I’ll definitely be back before the end of the season. Definitely.” Asked if he could throw consecutive days upon his return, he said, “Yeah, why not? If it’s healthy, it’s healthy.”

• Right-hander Pedro Martinez (neck stiffness) threw off flat ground Wednesday. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Martinez told him he felt better and sounded optimistic he would start Saturday against Milwaukee.

Hamels excels, Howard wins it in 10th

The truth will be told in a couple weeks, when Cole Hamels has a greater body of work to examine.

But if he looked like a different pitcher Wednesday at PNC Park than the one that had struggled most of the season, he said he felt like a different pitcher. Hamels, who entered the night with the fifth-highest ERA in the National League, threw eight scoreless innings in a 4-1 victory in 10 innings over the Pirates. He had been in line for the win, too, until Ryan Madson blew the save in the ninth before Ryan Howard’s three-run homer won the game in the 10th.

Rollins displaying ‘07 MVP form at plate

Jimmy Rollins said he doesn’t see or feel much of a difference in his swing.

But there clearly is a difference since he snapped a career-worst 0-for-28 slump July 2 against the Braves at Turner Field — a slump that lasted 14 days and 12 games. He had hit just .205 with six home runs, 27 RBIs, a .250 on-base percentage and a .319 slugging percentage through July 1. He had been benched four consecutive games in late June. Fans had screamed for Phillies manager Charlie Manuel to drop him in the lineup.

Myers denies involvement in altercation

Brett Myers strongly denied his involvement in any physical or verbal altercations early Saturday morning at an Irish pub in Jacksonville, Fla., where he lives.

Police confirmed that Myers did not injure his left eye at Shannon’s Irish Pub, and that he had no involvement in a physical disturbance that damaged some band equipment. Sgt. Chuck Mulligan, a spokesman for the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, also said police have no knowledge that Myers was involved in any verbal confrontations with any patrons.

“I was in no way involved with pushing or shoving or yelling at anybody,” Myers told MLB.com. “People are saying it was me, and it really wasn’t. I’m tired of people saying things about me that aren’t true.”

This started when the Phillies scratched Myers from his rehab start Saturday night with Class A Clearwater because he injured his left eye. Myers originally told the Phillies he injured his eye while playing catch with his 4-year-old son, Kolt. Myers said his wife Kim urged him to tell the Phillies the truth: He said while trying to exit the back seat of his wife’s Cadillac Escalade after returning from the restaurant, he tripped and smashed his face on the door’s armrest.

Lee out to deliver encore performance

Cliff Lee made quite the first impression with the Phillies.

He tossed a complete-game four-hitter Friday, baffling the Giants in a 5-1 win at AT&T Park.

Against the Rockies on Thursday, the 2008 American League Cy Young Award winner gets to introduce himself to the notoriously tough Philadelphia faithful.

That job will be slightly harder at Citizens Bank Park. Lee will benefit from pitching in the National League; with the Indians, he was 12-2 with a 3.18 ERA and .245 opponents’ batting average in Interleague Play. Lee will also benefit from the Phillies’ potent offense; this season, he had the eighth-worst run support in the American League
