Pedro Returning?

In 2009, the Philadelphia Phillies signed Pedro Martinez to strengthen their starting rotation. One year later, history could repeat itself. Philadelphia has had some discussions with Martinez and his agent about making a return to a team that is desperate to help. Unfortunately, Pedro won’t bring a big bat with him, as the Phillies could use those.

But outside of Roy Halladay, the pitching has been shaky. With Happ on the DL, it forces Philadelphia to use Kyle Kendrick, Jamie Moyer, and Joe Blanton as starters. All have extremely high ERA’s.

Realistically, Martinez would not be pitching within the next month. It is not a guarantee that he will sign, but he will want work, and the Phillies will be looking to hire.

You can’t blame Pedro

Pedro Martinez was going to be forgotten quickly.

Remember when the Phillies signed him back in July, an aging pitcher who had a deplorable season, who went unwanted through the first half of the season?
Maybe he would give them a few good starts, flash some glimpses of his former self, and win a few games so that the Phillies could get through the rest of the regular season.
Then, he would surely be forgotten in the playoffs.
Yet look at Martinez now.
He has become, along with Cliff Lee, the Phillies’ most important starting pitcher.

Phillies looking for Pedro to go long

The weather report calls for a clear Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park. Pedro Martinez doesn’t quite believe it. Not after rain has followed his comeback trail ever since he began Minor League rehab outings. And two of his four starts with Philadelphia were cut short by precipitation.

If the skies don’t open up, though, the Phillies want to continue to stretch out Martinez as he faces the Giants.

“We’ve been trying to get him to from 100 to about 105, 110 pitches,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “He was getting there, and the two rainouts set him back a little bit. But I look at Pedro and I think he can definitely be a six-inning guy. I definitely think that. I think he’s still got a lot of pitchability left.”

Pedro slated for another rehab start

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said he likes his team’s pitching staff. Once it gets healthy, of course.

The Phillies have six pitchers on the disabled list: right-handers Brett Myers, Pedro Martinez, Clay Condrey and Chad Durbin and left-handers J.C. Romero and Antonio Bastardo.
Martinez (strained right shoulder) threw a bullpen session Sunday with Class A Lakewood. The Phillies announced Martinez will make a rehab start Wednesday for Double-A Reading.
