If the Phillies offense does not get back on track, it is safe to say that they will not be making a third straight trip to the World Series.

Tuesday night, the Philadelphia Phillies lost for the eighth time in ten games. While the National League favorites struggles are surprising enough, the fact that it is mostly due to their offense is shocking. Over the past two years, the Phillies offense has been a juggernaut. The club led the NL in runs in 2009 and were third in that category in 2008. This year, the Phillies rank eleventh in runs scored in the National League as they have seen the Braves move ahead of them in the standings in the NL East. Over the past ten games, the Phillies have scored just 13 runs and have been shut out five times.

While I expect the Phillies offense to get on track because that lineup is just too talented, there has to be a little concern in Philadelphia. Jimmy Rollins has been unable to stay healthy this year and they have not gotten much production from his replacement Juan Castro. If the Phillies are going to make a third straight trip to the World Series this fall, they must get a healthy and productive Jimmy Rollins back into the lineup. He is the catalyst for that offense and sets the table for Ryan Howard and Chase Utley.

Jimmy Rollins kept the replay guys at ESPN busy Sunday night. Outstanding defense will do that. Rollins made two impressive plays in the first inning and turned a heads-up, double play in the eighth that prevented an inning that had a ''crooked number'' written all over it. His defense, coupled with Carlos Ruiz's 3-for-3 night and Joe Blanton's quality start lifted the Phillies over the Atlanta Braves, 3-2, at Citizens Bank Park.

''Jimmy knows how to play the game,'' Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.

With one run already in and the Phils clinging to a one-run lead in the top of the eighth, Brian McCann came to the plate. McCann hit a grounder to second baseman Chase Utley, who tossed to Rollins, who was covering second. That forced Chipper Jones out. McCann was still on his way to first, but Rollins chose to fire the ball to third baseman Pedro Feliz instead, with the hope of getting the lead runner, Martin Prado.

But there clearly is a difference since he snapped a career-worst 0-for-28 slump July 2 against the Braves at Turner Field -- a slump that lasted 14 days and 12 games. He had hit just .205 with six home runs, 27 RBIs, a .250 on-base percentage and a .319 slugging percentage through July 1. He had been benched four consecutive games in late June.
