Lee preparing for chess match

What Phillies lefthander Cliff Lee called the “never-ending chess match” of hitter vs. pitcher goes to a different level tonight in the National League division series.

Lee will pitch against Colorado righthander Ubaldo Jimenez for the second time in six days. Facing the same team in consecutive starts presents a strategic question for each pitcher.

Should he plan to make significant changes, or follow the same approach?

“They’re going to watch the video of the last game and make adjustments,” Lee said last night. “They’d be a fool not to. That’s the nature of this game. If you’re not making adjustments, you’re losing ground.”

This situation rarely arises during the regular season.

Jimenez faced the same team in consecutive starts three times this season. In the rematches, he went 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA.

For Phillies starter Lee, pressure is all relative

Pressure? Cliff Lee has seen pressure, and starting Game 1 of the National League Division Series today for the Phillies isn’t it.

Pressure for Lee came eight years ago as he watched Jaxon, his 4-month-old son, hooked up to an IV, with tubes dangling everywhere, not knowing if he was going to survive.

Lee and his wife, Kristen, had just heard the devastating diagnosis of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). They were told Jaxon had about a 30 percent chance to live.

Four months later, those chances diminished further when Jaxon suffered a relapse. He had a growth behind his eye that required radiation. He needed a stem cell blood transplant from a donated umbilical cord.

Lee eyes first trip to postseason

Cliff Lee has never pitched in the postseason, which is something he has mentioned a few times since he joined the Phillies in July.

The Phillies are eager for him to experience the playoffs, too. It is why they sent four prospects to the Cleveland Indians on July 29 for him and outfielder Ben Francisco. They consider Lee, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, a talent capable of not only pitching well against the National League, but against the American League in a potential return to the World Series.

Lee has had mixed results in his career against the five AL teams that could reach the World Series, although he recently has enjoyed more success against them.

Lefty Lee loving life in Senior Circuit

There is a reason why Jake Peavy — before he accepted a trade to the White Sox — said he preferred to remain in the National League.

The American League pays big money for designated hitters like Jim Thome and David Ortiz. The National League has the pitchers hit, which means pitchers not only get to avoid threats like Thome and Ortiz, they get to face the worst hitters in baseball.

“It’s easier. Way easier,” Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee joked Tuesday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.

But Lee’s performance certainly shows he has adjusted quite nicely to the NL. He is 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA in three starts since the Phillies acquired him July 29 in a trade with the Indians. He has allowed 16 hits, three runs and six walks in 24 innings. He has struck out 24. Opponents have hit just .193 against him.

Lee, Phils pleased with his home debut

Cliff Lee likes pitching in Philadelphia. “The atmosphere is electric,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun knowing that the stands are going to be packed every game and they’re out there pulling for you.”

The fans greeted Lee with a rousing ovation and got exactly what they were pulling for Thursday. The Phillies, too, got exactly what they envisioned when they acquired the 30-year-old lefty from the Indians on July 29. Lee allowed just one run and struck out nine in his seven-inning home debut, then yielded to Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge, who completed a 3-1 victory over the Rockies at Citizens Bank Park.

Lee out to deliver encore performance

Cliff Lee made quite the first impression with the Phillies.

He tossed a complete-game four-hitter Friday, baffling the Giants in a 5-1 win at AT&T Park.

Against the Rockies on Thursday, the 2008 American League Cy Young Award winner gets to introduce himself to the notoriously tough Philadelphia faithful.

That job will be slightly harder at Citizens Bank Park. Lee will benefit from pitching in the National League; with the Indians, he was 12-2 with a 3.18 ERA and .245 opponents’ batting average in Interleague Play. Lee will also benefit from the Phillies’ potent offense; this season, he had the eighth-worst run support in the American League
